Glenn Beck: Obama hurting auto industry

What better way to help the ailing auto industry than to increase the CAFE standards that are already crippling automakers everywhere? Obama wants CAFE standard to be 42 miles per gallon by the year 2016 — translation: tinfoil cars that run on hamster power! If Obama keeps tightening the leash, it won’t be long before all of the big auto companies go under and are eaten up by the government — oh, wait — that’s probably the plan.

The real sad thing is as CAFÉ standards are tightened the consumer choice goes down. In the late 1960’s the car choices were great and distinctive. I will admit cars were more dangerous and less dependable than they are today but they had personality. These were the cars of dreams. The A/C Cobra, Mustang Cobra, Mako Vet, Ferrari Daytona, Jag E Type, Porsche 365, Pontiac GTO, Camaro, Mustang etc., these cars did more than define a generation, they were the last cars before the first CAFÉ standards were introduced. Since that time the cars have become more homogenous. With today’s standards we are producing cars that have no personality making all the cars look basically alike. Since it is hard to make us all wear a matching uniform we are all driving matching cars. Whether the government knows it or not they are erasing the feeling of unbridled individuality.
